My experience details extensive experience with at risk youth in multiple settings.  I have served the Southern California area as a county Social Worker, Outreach Consultant, School Counselor, PC1000 Drug Diversion Counselor, Barton Tutor, Community Colleges Consortium Instructor, and as a contract FFA social worker.

My experience with substance abuse counseling includes all age levels including the implementation of the “Too Good for Drugs (TGFD)” & “Too Goods for Violence(TGFV)”, Rainbow Days “Kids Connection(ages 4-12)” & “Youth Connection (ages 12-17) Curriculum Based Group Counseling.  In addition to my experience providing preventative educational counseling in the public education system, my substance abuse counseling experience has been utilized with young and older adults while serving as a PC1000 Drug Counselor.

PC100 is a court ordered drug diversion program for first time drug offenders.  Often times, many of my court ordered clients were lifelong users and have been caught under the influence or with paraphernalia.  Substance abuse counseling is my passion.   I specialize in the topic areas of:  pharmacology, recovery process, barriers to change, relapse prevention, denial and defense mechanisms, communication, anger management, stress management, motivation, and community resources.  In my position as a County Social Worker and as a School Counselor I have worked successfully with many families impacted with substance abuse issues.

In addition to substance abuse intervention, while I was a Lead Social Worker for the Los Angeles County of Department of Children and Family Services I provided many more social work services, which included: psycho-social assessment of families, evaluate risk of child abuse; formulated case plans, oversaw foster care placements, detained children; filed petitions with court to justify child(ren)s removal from home, prepared court reports and rendered recommendations, and delivered counseling and case management services in compliance with federal, state, county, and district laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures, including family maintenance, family reunification, permanent placement, and family preservation services.

My PPS in School Social Work has been exercised in a couple different capacities.  First as Pupil Personnel Services and Attendance (PSA) Counselor in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) in the Elementary and Middle School level and latter in other school districts in Elementary and the High School level.  In that capacity, I provided counseling to at risk, delinquent, and truant students.  My duties included home visits and developing an assessment plan to remove the barriers to a successful school experience.  Many circumstantial reasons were barriers to school attendance and success and my services encouraged many students to attend school again.

As an Outreach Consultant with the Ontario-Montclair School District I was responsible for providing school wide Counseling & Case Management Services. I organized facilitated and coordinated school-wide SST (Student Success Team) meetings.  I implemented the objectives of SB65 including early identification of students at great risk of failing and applying appropriate interventions.  In addition, conducted home visits, referrals to in-school and community agencies and alternative education options to meet the needs of those students.

I developed a school-wide attendance incentive program, monitored and increased attendance among high-risk students, reduced truancy, tardiness and frequent absenteeism, participated in the Montclair Community Healthy Start Collaborative, & prepared SB65 grant (after compiling data) to the California Department of Education.

Serving multiple Elementary Schools and at a Comprehensive High school, I provided a comprehensive guidance counseling program which included:   Student Success Team (SST), Individual Educational Plan (IEP) meetings, Student Evaluation Review Teams SERT, , development of 504 plans,  Behavior Support Plan, & Functional Behavioral Analysis assessments, individual and group counseling services including but not limited to special education students; observations, classroom interventions, & consultation with teachers recommending accommodations and modifications, crisis counseling and response, classroom guidance including but not limited to Too Good for Drugs, Too Good for Violence, and Anti-Bulling Curriculum, providing staff development on multiple needed topics, & educational planning, ensure high school graduation, facilitate admittance to post secondary education institutions, arrange credit recovery options, identify and remove barriers to learning, & assistance with FAFSA applications.

I am skilled in providing staff development and presented on many topics including Student Success Teams (SST), Child Abuse, Rainbow Days Kids Connection Curriculum, Suicide Prevention and more.  My staff development has not been limited to my role as a School Counselor.   I was a Chaffey-Citrus-Mt. San Antonio Community Colleges Consortium

Instructor for the San Gabriel Consortium of Foster Care/Kinship Care Education.  I provided Continuing Education and licensing hours for Foster Care Parents, Foster Family Agencies, and Relative and Kinship Providers. Presentations included, but not limited to:

  • Suicide Prevention
  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Child Sexual Abuse
  • Bedwetting, bowel movements, & Bodily Functions
  • Education Issues in Foster Care
  • Methamphetamine:  A drug epidemic
  • Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Prenatal Drug Exposure

My interest in learning disabilities and the Barton Reading Program came to light when my son was diagnosed with Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and ADHD. When my son was not responding to the interventions to school was providing, I discovered and trained myself in the Barton Spelling & Reading Program.   I quickly realized I could use it in my professional capacity as a School Counselor.  I have been successful remediating learning disabilities with this research based Orton-Gillingham method with students who were in need of this systemic reading intervention.  One student I provided the Barton system quickly jumped from “Below Basic” in reading as measured by the CST (California State Test) to “Proficient”.  My testimonial for my own son regarding the Barton program:
